A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of a small junior college I believe one on one teaching gives students the advantage over a large group because the child can receive the necessary attention for learning skills in reading, writing and math. Many children learn differently some are visual learners, some are audio etc. I have been instructed through various techniques in reading with chilldren that will help them achieve a higher reading level of success. I am a hands on person where math is concerned allowing the child to use mannipulatives. Taking time to explain until they understand. In reading we can do shared reading and other techniques.
I have a great joy working with children because most of them are eager to learn. Along with patience and proper instruction I am a firm believer the scores will be achieved without the child feeling diappointed. I believe through visual picture walks and othe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught classes at the college level since 2004. These include U.S. History surveys, the Civil War, African-American History, and others. I have worked mostly with teenagers in these classes. Recently, I tutored high school students at Dr. Linda Pearson's Reading and Math Center in Birmingham, AL. I am very comfortable working with students to improve their reading and writing abilities.
I try to set high standards in order to prepare students for future work. I like to ask questions which stimulate students to think about big ideas. I prefer to use Discussion-based teaching when applicable.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught in private high schools and colleges,as well as public high schools and universities for the past thirty years. I have a great passion for teaching and mentoring, with an emphasis on preparing students for college. My thesis in English was on Eudora Welty's fiction; however, my dissertation was on Shakespeare. My minor in undergraduate school was history; thus, I am also qualified to tutor in history. I have assisted editors for university publications and am well-qualified to edit essays. My studies at Montevallo were in public speaking and theatre, and I have taught public speaking on all levels. Guiding students toward becoming capable and polished speakers has also been an exciting part of my career.
My teaching style has been part lecture, part class discussion, part in-class assignments, and some cooperative education, with the more advanced students being l ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I love teaching middle and high school level students. I also enjoy working with adult English language learners. I believe to be successful in teaching, a teacher has to keep an open mind, because each student is different and his/her learning strategy is different. I believe collaborative method works best for students, because students will have to opportunity to learn from their peers in the classroom. Before beginning a lesson, a teacher has to find out the level of his/her student. Once the teacher is aware of the weakness and strength of her/his students, she/he can organize the group in the classroom. If the student is in lower level, then a traditional approach works better to start a lesson.
