More About This Tutor...

I have tutored three students: two middle school students in math, one high school student in AP biology. I also occasionally explain academic subjects to my friends and classmates. Through my years of experience, I've found that it is most effective to make sure the students are really thinking. When they get stuck, I ask them questions to point them in the right direction, but I almost never give them the answer unless a lot of time would be wasted otherwise. I'm also very good at catching mistakes, but instead of pointing them out right away, I usually also ask them leading questions to help them find the mistake on their own.

More About This Tutor...

I use a Socratic method, gently applied. I try to uncover what the student knows, and get back to the point where he/she has gotten lost. Once that is established we can move forward.
tutoring = 30 years: I have tutored students informally for as many years as I have been teaching. The topics I teach are difficult for many students, and some require out-of-class help. I have taught for nearly 30 years: a couple of years at a junior college in Cleveland, served as a TA in math and astronomy at OSU, then ~25 years at Denison Univ., and 4 years at a high school. Subjects taught: astronomy at Denison, physics at the jr. college, and physics, physical science, and Alg. II in high school. At Denison I ran the observatory and planetarium, and dealt with all ages during public guest nights, summer camps, Elderhostels, and teaching intensive summer workshops for teachers.

I have earned an Associate’s degree in Experimental Sciences and have been employed as a middle and high school biology and physics teacher. Being employed in a Francophone country, all of my lessons were taught in French. This experience has enabled me to gain a good understanding of how students learn and apply complex information. My desire for excellence in education has earned me top honors in my academic pursuits. I ranked Summa Cum Laude in my Theology degree in 2009. I have earned a Bachelor's degree in French Communication and have started a Master's degree in the same program. In addition, I am currently pursuing a second Bachelors degree in Psychology.

More About This Tutor...

I graduated from Ohio State in June 2011 with a BS in molecular genetics. I graduated with honors and with a GPA of 3.657. I have taken the MCAT with a score of 33 (10-BS, 12-PS, 11-V). I have never worked professionally as a tutor but I have tutored friends extensively throughout my college experience. I have an extensive background in biology, physics, chemistry, and the humanities. I am very well rounded in all subjects and would have no problem teaching any part of the MCAT, or any other educational material.
I really enjoy working with students, especially at the college level, who have not experienced a great deal of success in a particular subject and aspire to do better. I believe that the key to any kind of scientific or mathematical learning is repetition. It is first important to get to the heart of the concept, and see what is holding someone back from understand ... read more

I love working with students of all ages. I believe that all students can be taught, but not all in the same way. I cater my teaching style to match the learning style of the student. I strive to reach each student where they are, using relevant examples to aid the student in understanding the subject matter. I use humor and my maternal instincts to tap into the students’ hidden potential, emphasizing their strengths while nurturing their weaknesses.
I started tutoring a blind gentleman in his collegiate algebra course while still an undergrad. I later went on to TA several courses during my graduate work at A&T. While at OSU, I tutored math and chemistry for the Office of Minority Affairs where I conducted regular tutorial sessions in order to prepare students for level algebra, organic and inorganic chemistry exams and laboratories. For my math students I developed problem ... read more

More About This Tutor...

After returning to Ohio Dominican University to complete my certification to teach science, I was a long term substitute teacher and tutor in several central Ohio school districts. In 2005 I took a position as a Science/Math teacher in a remote Eskimo village in the Alaskan bush until 2010. During my tenure in Alaska I had the opportunity to teach and tutor all age groups ranging from first grade to adult and covering subjects that included all sciences and math to social studies and language arts. By being in two different villages over a period of five years, neither of which village totaled no more than 185 students, I had many unique experiences that few others are exposed to during a lifetime.
Without a doubt I am an excellent candidate for this position based on my teaching style, my life experience, my education, my enthusiasm and my love for science and life-long learning. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe the teaching/tutoring profession is indispensable for transmitting knowledge from one generation to the next. I consider teaching to be a two-way process, in which the teacher prepares himself/herself with the requisite material and provides a detailed and organized roadmap for success in learning a certain subject area, and the student does the reading necessary for doing homework and/or projects. I like using books as well as internet resources whenever possible to help facilitate the learning process. I will tutor to the best of my abilities and strive to challenge the student, but at the same time I would hope I could learn something as well from my student.
During my undergraduate studies at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY, where I majored in chemistry (chemical physics track), I had the opportunity to tutor in the Math Learning Center (MLC). As a tutor ... read more

I believe the best way to teach students is by utilizing a variety of learning styles. For example, for a visual learner, diagrams and pictures should be used but in order to compliment that repeating audible explanations would be great for someone who is an auditory learner. For any learner, the amount of repeated material provides for good review for students to make connections and the material to be cemented into the human mind.
Having the chance to attend one of the largest universities in the world has truly allowed me to experience opportunties to influence young minds.
