Don't tell me 2+2=4. Tell me WHY 2+2=4.

Although I wish I could count the endless amount of time I spent playing teacher as a child, I know parents are looking for more expierence than an eight year old and her dolls. I have tutored children, ages ranging from eight to fourteen, off and on for three years. I aim to work with people, by basically a read of the person and then testing them if I need more information. This then gives me the opportunity to relate to them on the many levels an effective teacher has to relate to make the child successful. The idea is to figure out what works on a given student and take their strengths and develop them. This is best done on a case by case basis and focusing in on improvising to cater the lesson to their desires. "If you're not on your toes here, you're not doing it right" is my motto.

I use the Socratic method, meeting the students where they are, and using gentle questioning to build on that base. I start with the assumption that all children are gifted learners, and communicate that belief to them. It is essential to create a base of success upon which to build future success. I also spend time finding something to like deeply about each child; and discovering what the child is interested in. When an adult takes an interest in the child's world, and shares that interest in a positive reinforcing manner, it opens to door to learning.
