A product of the North Carolina educational system, I was the recipient of Certificates of Art in 1981 & 1982, and the 1983 winner of the prestigious Art Pen Award. I can be helpful in math up through Algebra II, and have extensive knowledge of counseling, religious studies, writing, and have used accounting a bit in bookkeeping. I could tutor social studies up through high school because I have found such a great overlap between religion and counseling and human services. Right now I am in a class on trauma and presenting on human trafficking. I can tutor English in grammar and writing composition simply because of all the writing I have had to do for college. I took British Lit in my undergrad courses. I have a lot of experience with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and some exposure to Publishing. I could tutor basic computer skills in these areas.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that patience is key to a child's learning experience. When I was in school, I had teachers that were mostly concerned with tearing through the curriculum. Many times there were some left behind in the process who did not firmly grasp the concepts being taught. In one-on-one tutoring and teaching there is an opportunity to re-learn the material in a different way so that a child who may not have gotten in class has another chance to learn the material. More importantly, I make a great effort to understand HOW a child learns and to tailor my style to his or hers.
I graduated from Clayton State University with an AA in English Lit and then went on to complete my BA at Georgia State University with major in English Lit and a minor in Psychology. My teaching style consists of working with students in the affective and objective domains to make learning personal and enjoyable. That is, I address the student’s confidence and capabilities by establishing rapport and assessing his/her skills level through specific tasks or assessments. In the initial sessions, I determine the student’s interests through simple five-minute inventories or “getting-to-know-you” activities. With regards to academics, the study time always includes explanation or review of the focus skill (lesson) or task; my demonstrating the skill by completing a related task; a shared activity wherein the student and I complete a similar activity together; and, finally, the student’s practice of the skill in an independent activity.
