Deep understanding of math concepts

I usually start a topic by proposing a problem and making the student minds to think and naturally bringing up the concepts in the topic. Then I elaborate to explain the topic, usually drawing graphs, diagrams, etc. if necessary. To learn a specific skill, for example in Algebra or Calculus, I usually apply and explain the procedure for a few simple example and then explain the technique as a general procedure.
I am a math PhD student at Michigan State University with experience of teaching Calculus for 8 consecutive semester. Before that, back in my home, I have been teaching Algebra, Geometry and Discrete Math to high school students for more than 6 years. I have also several years of experience in teaching math preparation courses for student mathematics olympiads to smart and talented students.

I enjoy teaching groups as well as one on one sessions. I believe teaching in a group can be exceptionally helpful as children have the opportunity to not only learn from their designated teacher but also from each other. I enjoy working with all kinds of children and of any age. Teaching children individually is also extremely rewarding as one can give them his/her undivided attention. I come from a country where education is more of a privilege than a right. This has motivated me to teach since the past few years as I believe an educated nation is a healthy nation.
As a person who has grown up in Pakistan, studied in the UK and is now in US, I can communicate and understand different kinds of people. I have taught as a temporary teacher in a school called Education Bay in Karachi, Pakistan. I have also taught at a special children institute for 2 years in Karachi, Pakistan. I als ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that many students do not know how to study, and are unsure of where to begin. This is especially true for students entering college, or high school, who never really had to study before. As a tutor, it is my job to help the student break down the material into manageable parts and teach them to identify what is important, and how to get organized. The role of a tutor is to not give you the answers, but to help you get the answers on your own. I can show you how to problem solve, and help with test stress. I am available most evenings, and anytime on the weekends. I am also a member of the International Tutoring Association, and feel free to view my profile on LinkedIn at: http://www.linkedin.com/in/margaretholda

A Little Bit About Me...

In 2006 I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Engineering Science. It gave me an understanding in a broad range of mathematical areas as well as areas of other sciences. During that time I worked with volunteer organizations like Salem Housing and Habitat for humanity for three years, which enabled me to mentor a variety of ages. In the last year I've worked with a homeschooling group on a project called, "Leaping Lizards."
I love people's capacity for learning. It gives me joy to know that I have helped another learn something new. I am patient, relaxed, and try to keep tutoring interesting for the recipient. It's important that the tutoree is engaged and enjoys grasping new lessons. I like to guide students into understanding the problem rather than just merely giving them the answer.

My teaching style is rooted in my belief that children learn in different ways and levels. I strongly believe in differentiating my teaching to meet the needs of the students. My goal is to be flexible in my teaching approaches in order to adapt to the learning style of the students I'm working with. I also believe that to properly internalize a concept, students must experience it at many levels including theory, reading, writing, and physical manipulation. As a teacher, my demeanor is to be clear, patient, and interactive.
My career as an educator began when I started tutoring during high school. At a tutoring agency, I provided personal and small group tutoring for children ages 4-15 in math and reading. When I decided to pursue a degree in education, I gained experience by volunteering at summer school programs. I worked with diverse groups of children in first and fourth grade ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Whenever I begin working with a student, I assess their skills and identify the areas of concern. Are they lacking the prerequisite skills for a class they are struggling with? Are they struggling because they need more repetition and review, or because they lack organizational skills? Identifying the area of weakness makes it possible for me to individualize my tutoring to meet a student’s learning styles and needs. My goal in tutoring is not only to target the areas of weakness to allow a student to succeed, but also to help them become more aware of their areas of weakness and strengths. Tutoring should not only help students master the material in their current classes, but also help students develop effective study strategies and problem solving skills that will allow them to complete their work independently, when their tutor isn't there and succeed in both current and future c ... read more
