I have worked with students from age 7 to 25, and have loved each age group for different reasons. My standpoint is that a teacher acts like a mentor in a student's life, not as a nurse. They don't provide solutions, but provide the circumstances which will lead a child to figuring out the solution on his/her own. An approach which I have used while teaching college students, and which has been the one I have had the most success with is the "Observing/Verifying/Deducting Approach" used mostly when learning grammar. If a student is learning to add an 's' to plural nouns, he/she would read a sentence which demonstrates the usage of this rule. "Mary has one pen. John has three pens. But Peter has many pens."
