A Little Bit About Me...

I am a retired classroom teacher with over 35 years of experience. I have taught in all grades in elementary school as well as college classes online and on campus. My area of expertise is reading. During most of my years of teaching, I worked in a "self-contained" classroom setting so I was responsible for teaching all subject areas in the grade level. I love all children but find I really connect with the younger learners.
I enjoy children, especially young children and I believe that everyone can learn. I know that one-on-one hands-on teaching is the best and that is the approach that I take when tutoring. I have a degree in Early Childhool however, I have taught Biology for 9th and 10th graders in a private school. My husband, being prior military kept us moving so I have been a substitute for many years. I also taught my son until the 4th grade and he is now attending private school.
I believe that there are 3 types of learners: 1.Oral : learn by hearing 2.Visual : learn by seeing 3.Kinesthetic: learn by hearing, seeing and using their hands The Oral learner is a “teacher’s pet” because they are the students that will listen in class, barely take notes and do quite well in school. The Visual learner must “look on” as a teacher reads, not taking notes but to follow along in a book. The Kinesthetic learner usually has to listen, take notes, read along but will also tap their foot or a pencil.These types of “distractions” actually help a kinesthetic learner.

In my experience teaching a wide range of ages and children from very different backgrounds, I have seen how all students can thrive in an academic setting with the right instructional strategy. All students learn differently; some need their assignments read aloud, while others prefer to read alone. Some learn better by hearing what is being taught, while others prefer to learn with visual aides.
