I believe that there is not one way to teach everybody. Everyone learns in a different way and at different speeds. I like to help a person understand a topic in the best way for them, not just learn how to use a formula to crank out a number. I graduated with my Master's in Chemical Engineering in 1985 and have used that experience and my life experience to excel at the tutoring that I have done over the last 15+ years. My philosophy of teaching can best be understood by interpreting the root word for education. Education comes from the Latin root word educare, which means to draw out. I believe in eliciting their thoughtful responses to the material presented toward them and demonstration of their understanding by applying or telling how the material would be applied to real life situations. I find that teaching works best if you tailor the material to your audience - i.e. you don't want to lose them OR bore them. Use what they know as a foundation to build on to teach new concepts. If material is difficult or unfamiliar to your class it's important to be prepared in advance with several approaches to get the material across. I remember as a student, often times I could not fully understand a new subject until I learned “why”. I believe that most children (and young adults), being inquisitive in nature, need to know “why”, not just “what”, “who”, or whatever else is important to learn. “Why” makes things make sense, and allows connections to be made to related concepts. When teaching, I try to get students to understand “why” as much as possible. I also try to get them to do as much as possible, make them work for the answers, instead of spoon feeding them.
