My comments on tutoring Government : Experienced to teach Middle School, High School

First off I approach learning with a degree of understanding for the student, I have found not all students learn at the same pace and have the same strengths and weakness. I like to build the strengths and bring up the weakness. A student must want to learn and to take ownership with his or her educational career no matter what the degree is in. I like to think, I can bring to table the confidence the student needs to make a difference in the way they learn. A Little Bit About Me...

I worked at a residential summer camp for five years. I ran an after-school program (including tutoring) for three years. I tutored a native Vietnamese elementary student in all subjects for three years. I taught at a therapeutic boarding school for 15 months, teaching English and Social Studies.
I am a patient teacher and take pride in taking the time to get to know what "works" for each individual student. I enjoy working with students in a one-on-one setting and in a classroom environment. Each child is different. I always try to notice and acknowledge what benefits each student, as I think this applies to all forms of teaching from academics to athletics. Getting on their level is what ultimately benefits the child from the get go and gains their interest. If I'm interested, then the child is interested. Some need more encouragement that others, more supervision, while others do better with an overview explanation followed by "hand off" approach, allowing their creative minds to think of the solution. I like to use practical applications wherever possible. One time, I was working with an 11 year old on fractions. With her parent's permission, I asked her to my home to help me make chocolate chip cookies. I deliberately did not use the "easy" measuring spoons or cups - I used the ones that forced her to figure out how many of a certain fraction would equal one whole. I don't believe the grade of "F" should stand for failure, but for feedback. It means the way you are doing something isn't working correctly. I use Thomas Edison experiment getting the light bulb- took him 99 attempts- if he quit after the tenth try we all might be using whale oil today or kerosene at night to read. I believe all children have the potential to learn however some children need to be motivated more about the importance of learning. I am willing to listen to a child to help them out plus I try to display the values of the Boy Scout Law and oath which includes kindness.
