As a re-founding member and President of the Syracuse University chapter of the National Society of Pershing Rifles (www.pershingriflessociety.org) I was responsible for the planning and instruction of between 12 and 20 students in the areas of Leadership, Project Management, Exhibition Drill and Wilderness Survival. I enjoy working with students in small groups, or one-on-one, I believe that in order to help a student succeed in a subject matter in is first necessary to show him/her a real life application of the skill set you are teaching. If you are teaching successive addition or subtractions, the use of a checkbook, and mock purchases, will allow the student to see the value of learning the skill as opposed to simply thinking of it as one more "rote task" she/he must learn to get a passing grade. I tried to help the students to the best of my ability and in a way conducive to learning. At a major university, biology and engineering students, let alone chemist need to take general and organic chemistry. So it is required to tailor how I tutor to what they needed. In some case it was a guide through problems because they knew the basic information and could not correlate from one step to the next. Other cases would be where giving examples and working through problems in a non-math related way. It all depends on the students how I taught, but I did so in a way that would help them remember what they earned to use it throughout their class and the rest of their college career.
