I enjoy helping people, particularly kids. It's a very good feeling to help kids understand so many of the concepts in science, math and computers that tend to stump them. I am an easy going and focused individual. I generally teach kids by relating the subject to something they are interested in. There is a very good example of this in the movie "Big", where Tom Hanks character is teaching algebra to a boy who likes basketball. This is a technique that I use frequently. I believe very strongly that kids need to understand the concepts underlying each problem so they can solve it through understanding and not just rote memorization.

After home educating my 4 children for 17 years, I returned to school to complete an AA degree in liberal arts and a BA degree in sociology. I now work as a math teacher working with children who range in age from 9-17 and have special needs.
I never give up on a child or an adult. I recently tutored a law enforcement official to help him understand and pass algebra. He didn't think anyone could help him. I completed my undergraduate studies at Florida Tech graduating near the top of my class while earning a B.S. in Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Engineering. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics while maintaining a 4.0 GPA in my graduate course work. In addition to my graduate course work I am also working as a graduate student assistant, or GSA, teaching freshman calculus classes and tutoring students. I am comfortable with many areas of methematics and I am confident I will be able to facilitate learning for students of many different skill levels.

A Little Bit About Me...

The most important part of teaching is to teach students the principle or concept behind a subject. I do not believe in making students memorize absurdly large lists of facts in order to pass a test. Learning should be more fundamental than that. When a student has been successfully taught something, the student should be able to solve an array of problems with a common theme.
At college I worked as a tutor for two years in the areas of chemistry and mathematics. I earned BA's in chemistry and biochemistry and have some laboratory experience. Having been educated at a liberal arts school has also given me the opportunity to study philosophy and sociology. I also write well, as writing is emphasized in all disciplines of study at Knox. Previous to my college education, I was also active in my tutoring program in high school.
