My comments on tutoring Biology : I completed two courses in biology as an undergraduate (cellular biology and organismal biology).

I have experience working with students who are advanced and seeking supplementary tutoring as well as with students who are having difficulty with a subject. I have tutored mathematics as well as chemistry, biology, physics, and other subjects. I have tutored students from a range of ages and I worked with my first student over four years ago while I was in college.
I try to work with students to find connections between different aspects of the material that we're working on as well as to find connections to other subjects. I find that by relating specific topics to broader perspectives on a subject as well as related subjects, the student can gain a greater appreciation for the coherence and importance of a particular subject area.

I love teaching and working with children. I believe that all children are capable of learning. Each child is unique and, therefore, has a unique style of learning that must be tapped in to so that they reach their maximum potential. I believe that learning by doing is the best method of learning. "My" kids are always successful and eager to learn. They understand that we are a team and that together we'll reach farther than they thought possible. There is no higher calling than that of teaching.
I have spent thirty-five years in the field of education. During my college years I worked in the early childhood field and I worked as a private tutor as a means of supporting my education. Since that time I have worked in public schools, religious organizations, private educational facilities, and non-profit organizations partnering with public schools. I have always been interested in science and using that science to benefit humanity. In college I pursued a bachelor degree in Biology and was president of molecular/mircobiology club and was an anatomy, organic chemistry, and physics tutor. As an undergraduate I was able to be involved in forensic DNA research. After graduating I entered medical school where I have pursued research interests in pediatric infectious diseases, and middle ear dysfunction. In medical school I tutored students in pathology and pharmacology. My passions are teaching and patient care.
I have a teaching style that is very adaptive to any individual. I am very patient and understanding that multiple approachs to grasp a subject may need to happen. I try to base all knowledge around concepts instead of rogue memorizing. I prefer 1:1 tutoring but have experience lecturing to large audiences.

“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel”. This metaphor best represents my perspective on education. The purpose of education is more than merely teaching the necessary curriculum but to further give children a desire to learn and to teach them how to develop their own minds. Education should nurture the inquisitiveness and curiosity in individuals and should help to prepare them for real life experiences. Overall, I am very easy going and fun to be around. I love to find any and all ways to make learning enjoyable. I am very passionate about teaching and helping young minds grow!
I currently hold a Bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration, and I will have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Early Childhood come May 2011. During my first degree, I tutored many kids at the Elementary level that was set up through t ... read more

For some time, I have been in other student's lives influencing their skills learning experience. As a grade school student, I worked with elementary school teachers for a couple of years, helping children in lower grade levels with math and science. Time and time again, through earning my diploma, BS in Biology and attending medical/dental school, I've invested my abilities to help students through lessons and courses that were hurdles: math, sciences, music, and Spanish.
First and foremost, getting to know the student and what appeals to them most is the objective. Correlating things that excite or motivate him/her with the subject of study helps maintain focus. From there on, giving a lead for the student to follow has worked best for me. Like filling in a blank to complete a statement, this approach provides a context for the pupil to work in, a guide. Above all, bending to fin ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am easygoing, but enjoy challenging my students to do well. I always try to be prepared and make sure that I am familiar with the material before any tutoring sessions. I am not concerned with time and feel that if it does take longer than the hour assigned to completely help the student understand the material, then I am more than willing to put in extra time to help them.
I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 2008 and am now almost done with my Master's in Biomedical Sciences. I was a laboratory teaching assistant for two years and a math tutor in the Creighton University Math Department for 2 years. I also did some private math tutoring for the undergraduates in Calculus I as well.

More About This Tutor...

Prior to and during my employment with Metropolitan Community College (Between 1998 and 2007) I was a volunteer tutor with non traditional students in the Adult Basic Education/General Education Development ABE/GED program of Metro community college.
I love to see the proverbial light come on and the students eyes widen and they say "OH! I get it!" I've tutored a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds. I try to make mathematics fun, like a puzzle to be figured out, and remove the "hard chore" stigma which is generally hard pressed into a students mind by the time I arrive. Getting the student to believe in themselves and believe mathematics isn't a daunting task it's just difficult until you learn the tricks is my goal. I've notice most students find word problems to be most challenging so I purchased a word problem book to draw examples from which seems to help.
