A Little Bit About Me...

I LOVE teaching and believe that one-on-one work (and small group work) is highly effective. I strive to become my students' friend, while also maintaining a professional work environment. My strong background in working with children ages 3 and up that have come from different backgrounds and that have had unique needs has helped me to cater specifically to my students' individual needs.
I have a total of 15 years experience speaking, reading and writing Spanish. I am very familiar with the different Spanish language variants. I lived in Chile for almost two consecutive years, and studied in Costa Rica for a short time. My B.A. is in Anthropology and Spanish, and my M.S. is in International Studies. I have developed a style of teaching that allows students to focus on their strengths and use them to incorporate different methods to overcoming their weaknesses. I believe that learning is best experienced in an environment where open discussion is welcome. My experience has taught me that students thrive more when engaged in conversation, critical thinking, and application of material rather than in a simple lecture format. Furthermore, I have found that students have a better chance of excelling when they find an application of a topic interesting and are allowed to focus on that topic. Therefore, rather than telling a student how to learn, I prefer to engage him or her and allow the student to aid in directing the sessions.
