I always liked playing up my quirky personality. My favorite teachers and professors were the goofy ones, the ones who can relate to the students' fun side. These teachers also challenged me the most, and I ended up getting so much more out of the course. I figure that, if a student likes the teacher, he or she will pay more attention and have a deeper respect for the teacher. I try to help students overcome their mental block about chemistry. Before a session begins, I like to determine a student's level of competency in the subject. My preferred method of teaching is hands-on, through real experiments. Unfortunately, experiments cannot always be done, so I use lots of illustrations and age-appropriate analogies that are easy to relate to. Many times students are convinced that science is a subject too difficult to conquer, that they must just survive it, but science is all around us. I strive for that "a-ha" moment when a student realizes that all biological and physiological processes are interrelated and that the trick to understanding science is to build on previously learned concepts. I believe that teaching solid fundamentals and relating more difficult topics to already learned information is key to helping students thoroughly understand the subject.
