My comments on tutoring Latin : For a six month period I worked in tandem with a highly proficient Latin instructor who had 14 students achieve Magna Cum Laude in Latin one year. As my language choice in high school, my studies in Latin have assisted in my achieving superior skills in English usage and expression and facilitated my learning French and Spanish. On my first visit to Italy, I found that I was able to comprehend a good part of Italian conversation.

For the greater part of my life I have been involved in various facets of education. I have acted as substitute teacher at the middle and high school levels for a total of 10 years, 8 of which were spent at 12 schools in Vermont and 2 at 10 schools in Hernando County FL. I held the position of Senior ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) with a highly reputed language school in Vienna, Austria for a period of 2 years and have offered ESOL instruction as a volunteer teacher at the Tarpon Springs campus of St. Petersburg College and with the Hernando County branches of H.E.A.R.T. and R.S.V.P. I have given prvate English language lessons to individuals from Nepal, Brazil and Puerto Rico. From December 2011 through April 2012 I was employed by "A Quantum Leap" as aa tutor under the SES program. While in the military, I volunteered to instruct Korean Air Force officers in correct ... read more

"Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.
After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.

My comments on tutoring Latin : Taught and tutored Latin I and II for 10-plus years

After attending (and teaching in) a graduate program in American/British Literature and Language at L.S.U., I realized that my true calling was teaching. I began teaching English, Journalism, S.A.T. Prep., Latin, and other subjects in Springfield, MA in 2003 in an alternative, urban high school. I taught (and tutored after school) until I moved to Florida in 2009, when my spouse began graduate studies at U.S.F. Since then, I have continued to tutor a wide range of students in subjects ranging from high school Latin, 5th grade Math, college English, S.A.T. and G.E.D. Preparation, and graduate level writing, and I have extensive training and experience with students who struggle with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD and ESL issues, as well as with children diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).
I believe that all students can and will achieve ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is entirely dependent upon my learner. Reflective practice guides my analysis of an individual's abilities, interests and potential which in turn guides my own instructional practice. While some learner's do require discipline and a strict agenda, I frequently relinquish powers to the learner in an effort to fully engage them in their own learning (while maintaining teacher authority of course). Through instructional facilitation, constructive practice and reflective play I look to encourage a well-rounded experience to advocate the love of learning to my student.
My experience in education is at once formal & casual, specific & broad. From working in the school setting with reading intensive students to conducting experiments and demonstrations on the floor of the MOSI science museum, I have gained a world of knowledge on teaching methodology and student assessme ... read more

I believe education should be individualized for each student. Instruction should be flexible and creative in order to adapt to a student’s learning style, speed, and personality. Additionally, students need to learn not just enough facts to pass a test, but they need to learn think critically and to problem solve. This means teaching not just the “what” and the “how” of a subject, but the most important and most frequently skipped “why.” Through patience, constructivist techniques that a allow a student to create their own deep understanding, and a good dose of humor, I have effectively taught a wide range of students, including students for whom English is their second language, students with learning disabilities, and gifted students.
I began my teaching career teaching free SAT preparation courses for students at schools in low socio-economic areas. This exhilarating and ful ... read more

I believe that each child's talents and abilities need to be nurtured through creative and constructive curriculum and delivery, including acknowledging the importance of integrating playtime with instruction. I have worked in many educational environments - public and private schools; juvenile detention facilities and home school cooperatives - each place offering it's own rules and protocol for developing and nurturing a child. One approach that I used in ALL these facilities yielded the best results for both child and educator (me!) and that was simply to follow this rule: provide trust and mutual respect, and give enough room for students to learn to make real, responsible choices in pursuing their true interests.

As a National Merit finalist, I have always been a dedicated, well-rounded student. I just recently graduated from the University of Florida with my BA in English (high honors) and minors in French and Latin. I'm a writer with excellent language and grammar skills. I have been tutoring since I was seventeen. During my college career, I tutored fellow students in English and writing.
I enjoy teaching people of all ages. I am infinitely patient and understanding. I have a natural ability to spot the source of a student's misunderstanding and then to clear it up in a way in which they will best understand. My goal is not to produce a pupil who can glibly repeat back the information I've given him, but who can apply the data with confidence so that he can see the importance of it and use it later on in his studies or in life.

I'm a journalist by trade. My love of writing began at an early age. A bachelor's degree in Theater immersed me in the works of Wiliam Shakespeare and from there I became fascinated with history and living history at that. I then obtained a Master's degree in Journalism to expand my skill set in both the English and Spanish languages. I have extensive experience working with bilingual students of all ages in the subjects of English-grammar,composition, literature. Spanish-grammar, conversational. History- World, Latin, American.
My teaching style is based on the premise that students want to learn and succeed. At times they are blocked in that endeavor by the level of difficulty, the complexities of a lesson or personal obstacles. It's my job as a tutor to find out what that hindrance is and help the student overcome it. I vary my teaching style based on the needs of the student.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduate on May 6 from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor's degree in English Literature. As a participant in the English Honors program and winner of the Outstanding Honors Student Scholarship in 2006, I have extensive training in reading and writing about literature. In addition to my academic studies, I have worked since early last year for the Princeton Review, a leading test-preparation company, as an SAT teacher and tutor. I lead classes with 10-12 students and do private tutoring in SAT math, reading, and writing.
High-schoolers are my favorite students because, at 21, I am young enough both to garner respect and to build rapport with them. While accelerated students are often a pleasure, I enjoy working with slower students because their little breakthroughs are eternally satisfying. I always consider for motto, "If my students can't achieve my expectations, it's my teaching approach to blame not them!" Because I believe teaching is an invitation for students to discover the vast knowledge and inspiration of a teacher. Therefore, it's up to that instructor to sell convincingly his or her product to the pupils with great pleasure and patience. I am firmly convince that all children can achieve the maximum of a classrom expectations if all, the methods, environment, and management, and dynamism are present. Finally great teachers can always be defined not by the amount of their experiences but by the difference they made in their student' lives.

The best way I learned to study was to see the information visually in a repetitive manner and practice many problems. However, I know that children are different in the ways they study; some may need an auditory or hands on approach and not just visual. I believe all students can learn and apply the information well if given the time and appropriate style for them. Thus, I use patience and encouragement when tutoring.
