My teaching style generally varies based on who I am tutoring/teaching. I generally treat my students as adults and under the assumption that they will go to college. I also tend to go a little beyond what is covered in the subject (especially in math) as a preparation for whatever course may come next (i.e. I would probably give a prealgebra student full fledged algebra work in order to prepare him/her for the next year).
I am a sophomore mathematics major at the University of Texas at El Paso. I have taught a GED class for adults facilitated by the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso (HACEP) and the YWCA. I have had 25 years teaching experience in the Texas public schools. I have taught mostly U.S. History in the middle schools but included in this was geography and the U.S. Constitution. I have also taught GED preparation to displaced workers in El Paso, TExas. Included in the GED was basic science and math. Before coming here, I was a supervisor for teaching interns at Angelo State University. I have taught in various levels, plus the last four years, I have tutored in English, composition and grammar for EPISD. Included in my experience, I have also taught various levels of Spanish. Teaching on a one-to-one basis is the most personal and rewarding experience that a teacher may have. Part of the reason for this dynamic between the teacher and the student is because a student can learn many times over when it becomes a one-to-one basis. Of course, if a student is predisposed towards a particular learning style that is effective then it must be utilized. Reward and knowledge must be a constant. I then help them find appropriate materials if they don't already own some. I try a few methods to find the one that works best. If I'm teaching a language I like to combine grammar, vocabulary building exercises, as well as speaking and listening. I give them small quizzes to measure their progress. I have tutored friend's children over the course of several years. I have taught religious studies for over 15 years to youth ages 14.
