I believe that each and every child is capable of learning. I like to make learning fun and exciting for children by relating what they are learning to the real world. For instance, if I am helping a student learn money value. I might pretend that I am customer purchasing something from the student (cashier). They then have to give me the correct change. "Teaching" was the way I supported myself through college. I was a lab instructor, university experience teacher, cultural anthropology tutor, nutrition educator, and even a gymnastic instructor. I was thankful to find the College of St. Mary's Masters of Arts in Teaching. It is a solid program that has given me the opportunity to have a formal education in teaching. In my program I have over 100 practicum hours in a middle school science classroom, I tutored AP chemistry, and I have had exposure to reading comprehension strategies in many of my classes. I received my bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I then moved to the University of Kansas where I completed a masters in Biochemistry and Biophysics. During this time I was a graduate teaching assistant for two years. I taught science labs including biochemistry I lab (2 semesters), biochemistry II lab (1 semester), and physiology lab (2 semesters). I also assisted in teaching biochemistry lecture. My degrees show that I have a strong background in science but to be a good biochemist you have to understand many different subjects.
