I have played piano for 30+ years; took music classes in college and have played the organ and piano for church services, weddings, funerals, as well as performed as accompanist for High School Choir. I have been teaching piano for the past 10 years and cover music theory, performance level skills and music composition. My approach to teaching involves making sure that the children are enjoying the lessons. My lessons incorporate using proper position of the hands, finger technique and proper fingering for each song, learning to read the scales, treble clef and bass clef, and applying style, musicality and expression to each song. I think it takes a lot for one teacher to reach all of types of students who are all at different levels of interest in the subject being taught as well as at different levels of understanding. However, I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to give them all equal opportunity to learn. It is not just about grades and assignments, that is just the means to an end, but it is about learning. In order for the students to learn, the teacher needs to be passionate about the students as well as the subject that is being taught. That will instill in the students a desire to learn and understand. In having a science background, I have not only learned laboratory skills and reasoning skills, but I have learned how to increase efficiency, communicate in a clear manner, and write in a way that is direct and clear. I enjoy learning, and I instill that passion into my students as best I can.
