I have a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from West Virginia University. I also played football in college and was active in tutoring fellow players. My course load was heavy in chemistry, physics, biology, and biochemistry. In high school, I tutored mathematics at Alexander Children's Center. Many of the children were abused at home, creating difficult challenges initially. However, I was able to work through some of these challenges by creating a calm and understanding environment, but also by establishing a routine. Today, I continue to volunteer at the Center as a basketball coach and can honestly say that I love working with children. I realize that tutoring for children without emotional problems will be entirely different, but I believe the fundamentals of my approach will improve the performance of my students.

Since high school I've been working with my peers to help clarify subject matter, as that was my favorite method of study. In college I tutored under-classmen in Spanish, chemistry, and political science. Since graduating, I've worked with college freshmen as a writing tutor and with middle school students to teach algebra and pre-algebra. I believe that first key step to successful teaching is to allows the student convey his/her needs or problem areas. While much can be gained from looking at previous evaluations and test scores, I think that it is crucial to let the student express their needs to make them feel comfortable and build a commitment to the teaching program. In individual sessions, I feel that allowing the student to discuss concepts out loud in addition to completing written exercises and preparing questions facilitates the learning process. I also find that real world analogies are useful ways of linking academic information to previously learned concepts and facilitate the student's understanding.
