A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from college, with a degree in math. Personally, I love maths, because everything in math is logical, and maths is the most fundamental subject for a lot of things. Here are some of the classes I have taken: Calculus 1, 2, 3, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Intro to Data Structures, Projective Geometry, Advanced Calculus, Abstract Algebra, Bayesian Data Analysis, etc. I have tutored colleges students in maths for more than two years now. I was a Teaching Assistant for one semester of Physical Chemistry at the University of Utah. This is literally the most difficult course in the Chemistry department for undergraduates. I was responsible for 6X 1 hour sessions per week over the course of a semester. I also would handle questions outside of class.
I think largely the greatest barrier to learning is a background context for the material. Many adults are still scared of Algebra because of some past experience as a kid. I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.
