Through teaching at UNH and at Hartwick, I have developed a cogent teaching strategy. First, incorporation of everyday examples is critical for students. When students are shown how concepts discussed in class can be applied to everyday situations, they become more curious and gain better understanding of the material. Second, another of my teaching strategies is to emphasize comprehension of concepts instead of memorization. I caution students against memorizing equations for every individual condition or system. Tutoring should be a tool used to complement traditional education. When tutoring there is little help in providing information to the student the same way that the teacher presents it. Tutors may also fall into the trap of simply giving the student the answers. For these reasons I prefer an holistic approach to tutoring. Every student is different and they all have different ways of understanding the material. I am finishing up my Bachelors degree in Dietetics at SUNY Oneonta- I will be graduated in December. I have been offered positions as a chemistry tutor but denied because of my other jobs. I was a student mentor for a year in high school to students that were "slacking" or wasn't understanding one or more of their classes. I worked at Albany ARC and worked to train young adults and adults in the kitchen- which also included basic skills such as counting and reading.
I really would like to help make a difference in someone's life and help them understand academics just like myself.
