Before I begin to teach I like to attempt to understand how much the student comprehends about the particular subject. I prefer to teach globally and with examples. I find teaching very rewarding and uplifting. I love the field of microbiology and it shines through my teaching. When you work with a student and you can actually see the light bulb go off in their head- wow! I like to try and find a bit of fun within the subject and use it to help a troubled student actually enjoy what they are learning. For older students, sometimes an upfront no-nonsence approach is best. It really depends on the learner, but I have yet to find a student I couldn't help. Individualization is an important part of my teaching style. I think it is important to identify what the student needs to work on and present it in a way the student can grasp the concept and enjoy learning. The student has to enjoy learning to succeed. I try to present material in such a way that the student will find it interesting and use different techniques to help them remember what they have learned. I also use the pre-teaching/re-teaching strategy. The student doesn't feel overwhelmed with the newly presented material, more confident to participate in class, more willing to ask a question, and is more successful with class work and homework assignments.
