A Little Bit About Me...

I have always been extremely focused on education, both my own and that of others. Starting in elementary school, I was assigned as a peer tutor to other students who had difficulty grasping the material. I continued to tutor my classmates until graduation. While in high school, I also began tutoring students that were still in elementary and middle school. Although I considered education as a career, I instead opted to major in psychology, in which I earned a BA in 2007. I also hold an AA in Liberal Studies. While earning these degrees, I tutored fellow classmates in the areas of English, algebra, psychology, and history. I also tutored middle school level children in reading comprehension.

I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.
I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them. If no progerss is made or if an issue needs to re-addressed, praise them..."That was great, but let's try it this way!" As an early childhood teacher, I have had several opportunities to help children (school age), to do homework. I also was a tutor in high school to a boy for just Algebra, which then turned around to being all of his subjects and helping him keep on track. The hardest thing for me was that he had only lived in the U.S. for four years, and had trouble speaking English. After each session of tutoring, I would grab the Scrabble board, which encouraged him to use more words, learn new words, and have fun while doing so.
I like to get to the point of certain problems, such as reading the child/student when I see them, ask them some questions about the subjects they need help in and why they need help. I have worked with Infants-School age for over 5 years, and enjoy being there to help someone in need. I believe in giving back, because so many of us are blessed already.
