Reasonable Rates for a Passionate, Experienced Teacher

I have been teaching Information Technology at both the elementary and middle-school level in private schools in Northern Virginia for most of the last ten years. In addition, I have tutored at high-school level in Chemistry and History. With both a Bachelor's Degree in History, and a Maser's degree in Network Information Systems, I am qualified to tutor in both the Social as well as the Computer Sciences, with an additional capability in Chemistry and Math at the advanced high school level.
I think that the most important aspect of tutoring is finding out why the student needs a tutor, and to get to the bottom of that, it is important to listen to the student and figure out what the barrier to learning has been. Once that is solved, whether it be a lack of interest in the subject, or simply a lack of aptitude for that subject (not all of us are math wizards, for example), I dev ... read more

Chemistry is one of my top subjects! Expert at all General Chemistry I & II concepts. Particularly good at emphasizing the important concepts of General Chemistry I and II that keep coming back to haunt you over and over again in future chapters if you don't get them right the first time: dimensional analysis (unit chaining and canceling), the key element groups and their properties (alkali metals, halogens, etc.), how to name chemical compounds and acids, gas laws, energy and heats (of formation, etc.), balancing chemical equations, solubility, oxidation-reduction reactions, using Lewis structures to determine polarity, intermolecular forces, and especially, ICE tables. Everything is connected in chemistry, and I will make sure you don't get away with not knowing something really important you should have already learned when you're halfway through the course.

If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. Maybe you're a visual learner and like to SEE things explained and SEE examples. (About 80% of students are visual learners.) On the other hand, you might say, "It sounds like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! sounds. Maybe you like to HEAR things explained, and you're a keen listener and like to hear things described clearly and specifically. Or maybe you'll say, "I FEEL like they want me to factor here" (as you tap the problem with your pencil). And I'll think, "Aha! FEEL. Maybe you learn by intuition and need to just jump in and work a problem or two with me step-by-step and discover the pattern of what's going on and pick up the FEEL of it. So... ... read more

Chemistry is one of my top subjects! I have a Bachlor's in Science degree in Chemistry and have tutored a friend in General Chemistry before.

I have worked for various chemical companies, in both research and quality control settings. I have prevously tutored a friend in her General Chemistry class. I am more comfortable with General Chemistry concepts then some of the more advanced material, since I mostly deal with those in my current job. I believe I do a fairly good job of simplifiying difficult chemistry concepts in such a way that they can be easily understood.

I have taught chemistry, physics, biology, earth science, environmental science, horticulture, and principles of technology in my twenty-five year career. I have often taught lower math classes as well, ranging from Math 8 to Algebra I and geometry.
I really enjoy working with young teens. I have worked in high schools for 25 years in Virginia and West Virginia. I have always had good rapport with teens and have enjoyed interacting with them. I have been trained in the Constructivist approach to teaching, but have had to change my style of teaching in order to cover materials necessary for SOL testing in recent years. I have been blessed with professors at the university level who understand the importance of one-on-one instruction. Through the "creativity" of thoughtful instructors I have seen myself grow and develop in ways that I hadn't thought possible. Every student learns differently, and once the instructor gets to know the student well enough and is able to tailor their lessons to the needs of the student, true learning happens. Teaching isn't just about preparing a student for a test; teaching is about creating and inspiring the desire to learn within the student so that they will be learn, not just because they are forced to, but because they are thirsty for knowledge.
I have spent several years as a student and tutor at the university level. I am planning to enter medical school in the Fall of 2012 and as such have developed a strong foundation in the sciences throughout my undergradu ... read more

I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all kids can learn so much if they work as hard as they can and put forth maximum effort. I think it is very easy to learn/teach using as many hands on examples as possible.

The joy that teaching and interacting with children brings is indescribable; there are few things that can match the satisfaction one feels when a pupil finally "gets it!" I believe that true education comes through understanding. Oftentimes students are taught tricks or rules to help them through a subject area, but I strive to bring my students to a point of clarity; I want them to be completely comfortable with the subject content because they understand it, not because they memorized a formula. Therefore, I am a firm believer in teaching the material and not simply teaching students how to answer a particular question.

A Little Bit About Me...

Through earning my degree in biomedical science, I have accrued a significant amount of experience in both chemistry and biology. My passion has always been for the sciences, but I also minored in International Relations. I am well versed in all of the topics covered in my major and minor as well as several others. As a worker in employ of the school of sciences, I have been asked to tutor students in general and organic chemistry, physics and history and those students which I have tutored saw significant improvements in their test scores, while at the same time enjoying the experience of learning by understanding concepts, rather than memorizing information.
I know that each student has an incredible amount of potential and the trick to unlocking it is not in forcing a set way of understanding ideas, but in approaching each problem from several different fronts and working towa ... read more
