The first thing that I like to do as a teacher is tell my students why I chose my profession. I think a little insight as to who I am, lets my students know how passionate I am about my job. All students do not learn in the same ways, nor do they learn at the same paces. It is my job to build upon my students' strengths, and make them believe that they can succeed.
I received my BS degree with the intent of gaining a MA in teaching. While I was obtaining my MA, I performed as a substitute teacher in several school districts. I had access to 2 long-term teaching positions. The first was for high school special education in history and the second was for 8th grade language arts. After completing my B.A., I was hired as a professional tutor. I believe that everyone has a different learning style and that we can never assume that one individual is the same in the way that they learn. In teaching I try to implement different approaches to see which one may work the best and stick to that method. I have found flash cards, memorization skills and techniques as well as a hands on approach to be some of the best methods. I also believe that creating a relaxed and fun atmosphere helps most people retain what they have learned.
