A Little Bit About Me...

My desire to teach stems from my hopeful view of youth. During the past seven years I have been successful in promoting access to higher education to youth of diverse backgrounds by organizing educational workshops and/or working directly on school campuses. I have earned a B.A. in Communications with an emphasis in advertising and a minor in Chicano Studies, which has enabled me to gain skills in public speaking, creative writing and art. Also, I have great knowledge regarding sociology, political science and history.
As an undergrad, I excelled in the arts, history and social science courses. However, I lacked interest in math (I didn't get it) and failed college algebra two times! My style of tutoring is skills-focused, with a goal of student independence. I am patient and work to facilitate a student’s ability to do the work herself, by giving her strategies for navigating her own work, and helping her to see, or mentally organize, reading and writing in new ways. Positive encouragement and building self-confidence are always important to me. Finally, I feel students learn best while doing meaningful work toward their own academic goals within a safe, fun environment. Tutoring is a joyful challenge and privilege for me and I look forward to helping more students in the future.
