As cliché as this sounds - my favorite part of teaching is the satisfaction of knowing I made a difference. I enjoy teaching students of all ages, individually or in groups. I find the Socratic method most useful, and with children this translates into making the subject (i.e. German grammar) seem like a puzzle that, with some effort, can be solved. I think students are best served when they can discover these answers for themselves.
I have a BA in English and a Master's and Ph.D. in German (Germanic Linguistics). I have taught English literature as a substitute in junior and senior high schools, college level German, linguistics, English reading and writing and English as a Second language. As a graduate of the University of Saint Thomas, I have an English degree and am a few classes/credits short of a Business Administration degree. At Bethel University I pursued a Secondary Education teaching certificate. Seeing an opportunity to teach high school english in Texas, I pursued teaching and volunteer teaching while living and working in Texas. I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I am enrolled in a doctoral program currently to earn my Ed.D in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. I have a great amount of experience in research and writing and have been teaching at-risk youth for 2 years. Primarily, I teach all Social Studies classes. However, I am very comfortable tutoring and teaching English, Composition, and Science classes such as Biology, High School Genetics, and Anatomy.
