I always teach the material in a way that was easy for me to learn. I learn best through "hands on" approaches. I learned how to write by practicing and imitating other professionals. My assignments are creative, but I always strive for practical results and measurable improvement. I want students to notice their improvement, but also to realize that what they've learned is useable in the "real" world.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a senior at the University of South Carolina Honors College. In May 2013, I will graduate with degree in Biology, a minor in English, and a cognate in Chemistry. My current GPA is 3.928. I was a pre-med student until recently, and I was my high school Valedictorian. I have tutored children in the past from ages 7 to 13, but I am comfortable tutoring all ages. I am also have a strong knowledge of the German language.
I like to provide an explanation, and have the student complete a similar exercise themself, with help from me only as needed.

I am currently teaching first-year composition as a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati. I have been teaching at UC for two academic years and will graduate with my MA degree in June 2010. I teach and design freshman and sophomore level writing courses independently as a graduate teacher. I have taken the Praxxis English exam and can provide test scores upon request. As an undergraduate, I completed two years of elementary education coursework, including educational psychology and educational technology. My teaching style revolves around the idea of mastering important aspects of a subject area before moving to a more difficult subject area. In our current education system, students are allowed to move to more difficult courses without having the necessary building blocks. Through one-on-one tutoring, it is possible to take a couple steps back, assess a student's current capabilities and tailor lessons to the individual student (i.e. one student may need to back track and practice fractions before moving on to more difficult algebra). I also enjoy working with students are looking to excel beyond their grade level by challenging their problem-solving capabilities with new ideas and techniques in a variety of subject areas.
