Experienced, question-based biology tutor

I received my M.S. in Biology from Eastern Michigan University in 2014. I taught introductory biology courses there for two years, with subjects ranging from population ecology to genetics. I enjoy teaching students who have some motivation to learn, and care about their subject matter. I like to make learning fun, because I feel so many kids today take courses to build a resume, rather than because they want to take them. I also feel like there is great deal that can be learned from the student as well. Teaching children has been part of my life for many years, on many levels. I am currently a full time substitute teacher for Ann Arbor Public Schools. My past experience includes teaching Pre-K, preschool, directing educational camp programming, as well as substitute teaching for various grade levels. My education and experience has made working with children enjoyable and meaningful.

A Little Bit About Me...

I wanted to excite others as Chemistry had excited me. I teach the material and why it is so exciting. My style adapts to that specific student’s strengths, weaknesses and interests. I always try and connect their interests to the material, so it is more than just words and starts to be interesting. Chemistry is scary to many people, because they try to memorize, it’s too intricate remember everything. I teach the student to understand why and how substances react or behave. Knowledge of basics, allows the student to solve problems as they are given instead of memorizing specific answers. Problems must be asked from every angle so the student learns to use the basics to solve any scenario. Chemistry then becomes logical.

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating from Central Michigan with a BS in Business, I decided to go back to school to become a science teacher. I will be certified to teach grades 7-12 in Biology and in Chemistry. I am currently finishing up my last 3 classes before I begin student teaching. In the fall I will teach classes at Eastern Michigan to prospecting elementary teachers. I have also taught several lessons at the middle school and high school level and have tutored students one-on-one.
Science is not the easiest of concepts to grasp so in order to enhance student learning I input a bit of humor into my lesson. through my teaching career I have had numerous workshops and professional Development in all areas in education. I have been able to combine different teaching strategies to fit the needs of my students. In Arizona I taught Fourth Grade where 80% of my studens were English Language Learners of Hispanic decent. This was a real leaning experience. I took the Dibels training which really helped my teaching techniques. Using Orton-Guillingham guidelines with the hundreds of hours of teacher training allowed my students to excel.
