I have found, through teaching a wide variety of people a wide variety of subjects, that there is no one way to reach someone. Everyone has individual strengths and weaknesses. What I have found, however, is requisite to meet the needs of all students is respect for the learner. Without the requisite respect and encouragement, struggling students find it easy to give up and continue to believe that they aren't able to learn the material being presented. With respect and understanding for the students' needs, along with patience, preparedness and open communication, I feel I am able to reach students who are willing to be reached, and some who initially aren't so willing. I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. I would like to help youth and young adults with disabilities learn to read as well. Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing.

I graduated from Plymouth State University in 2008 with my B.S. in Health Education. My option was Wellness Management which has a business component but in obtaining the degree I was required to do some teaching as well. (Not formally, more presentations to my peers and community education. I do not have a teacher certification.) I am a Certified Health Education Specialist which is a certification on top of my degree. I did some mentoring while I lived in Dover, NH and greatly enjoyed my time spent working with youth. I currently teach at a small K-12 school where I taught business classes. My current course load includes Introduction to Career, Business Management, Business Math, Accounting, and Work-based Learning. I am also the director of the Stratford Alternative Education Program. This program allows me to help students complete courses such as Chemistry, Biology, and Algebra so they may receive a state diploma. Working in a K-12 environment has helped me gain a better understanding of the cognitive development and thought processes.
