Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. I have found, through teaching a wide variety of people a wide variety of subjects, that there is no one way to reach someone. Everyone has individual strengths and weaknesses. What I have found, however, is requisite to meet the needs of all students is respect for the learner. Without the requisite respect and encouragement, struggling students find it easy to give up and continue to believe that they aren't able to learn the material being presented. One of the most interesting aspects of teaching is how different people process information. Oft times it is difficult to find a teaching style or method that can be equally useful to people of different learning types. I have found that teaching methods common to experiential educators, common practice in such disciplines as SCUBA diving, First Aid/CPR, Martial Arts, Art, etc., can be successfully applied to virtually any academic discipline. I currently teach at a small K-12 school where I taught business classes.
