Free and unconstrained autobiographical writing is one of the best ways to coax a student insecure about his or her writing skills into putting into words intense experiences from their own life. I tell my students to just tell me in their own words what they are trying to say. When they speak aloud, the words flow, and then I say, "There is your opening sentence right there. Quick! Write it down." At other times, I ask them to pretend that they are really someone else, an actor in a television show, for example, and I have them imagine that the character, not they themselves, are speaking. This releases the student to let go of inhibitions and let the film roll "for the character" and then they stop focusing on themselves.

I have worked with the Milwaukee Public Schools since January 2007 as a Paraprofessional Educational Assistant. I assist students with challenging subjects as needed. Previous to working in the Milwaukee Public Schools District, I worked at the UW-Milwaukee Children’s Center as a teacher in a kindergarten classroom. I instructed students on reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Through my courses at UW-Milwaukee, I have been placed in many field placements. In these field placements, I planned and implemented lesson plans.
I believe that every child can learn and be successful. Students all do not learn the same as the teacher, you need to change how you teach and present materials to get the attention of all of the learners in the classroom. As a student I enjoyed most the teachers who facilitated learning. Teachers who lead students on a road of discovery as they learned, who taught me how to think and not what to think. I model my teaching after the same style I enjoyed as a student. Helping a student discover for themselves the material not only educates them but fosters a passion for the subject at hand. Rote memory has it's place and is essential, but when a student becomes passionate about a subject, then the door is open for them to excel at it. I love teaching children and being able to see them learn. It is awesome to see and hear when they finally "get it" or when they understand something that I taught them. Moreover, when a student gives you an answer to a question and uses an example of something that you taught them earlier, it really shows you how quickly they can pick things up. My teaching "style" is very open--I will have an outline and while I am presenting I will sometimes ask for examples from the students to help get us through the outline together. You can't speak AT them; you have to involve the students in what you are teaching them.

I was homeschooled for the majority of my education which enabled me to assit my younger brothers and sisters in their studies.
