I believe that the learning process in the sciences requires a combination of individual study time, instructor guidance, hands-on experiences, and reflection time. I try to incorporate models and activities/games into my lesson plans as much as possible to help my students make connections with concrete examples that they won't forget. I am currently teaching the Marine Biology Field Studies and Lab course (OCB 4043L) at Florida Atlantic University. I take my students into the field on snorkeling trips to teach them field sampling techniques, and then how to analyze samples back at the lab.
