A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer one-on-one conversation in a question-and-answer format (Socratic method). However, sometimes a straightforward explanation is needed. For math tutoring, the best results come from working through problems step-by-step.
I have been teaching at the college level for 6 years, and I have 2 years of earlier experience at the middle school level as well. My BS in Electrical Engineering enables me to tutor effectively in math and science, and my PhD in Philosophy qualifies me for Science, History, and some writing help (I have published in peer-reviewed journals). I have often tutored privately for friends and family, and they tell me I do a very good job.

I firmly believe that if a subject seems incomprehensible, nine times out of ten it is the professor and NOT the intelligence of the student. Likewise, I believe lack of effort or motivation also play a significant roll when a student performs poorly. My formula for success is simple, we work through the problems together, and repeat until the student can comfortably complete the problem on their own. I started off being an elementary aide/tutor in 1988 in public schools. I loved working with children so I decided to go back to college to become a teacher. I attended several colleges in different cities (where my husband, daughter and I lived at the time). We moved to Amarillo,Tx. in 1994 where I attended Amarillo College to finish my basic hours. I transferred to West Texas A&M University in Canyon,Texas. I graduated in 1998 with a BS in elementary education and a concentration in math- grade levels 1st through 8th. I have taught 1st and 3rd grade and also 8 years of middle school math.
