Exercise your mind! Read, Write and Rule!

I have worked with youth in several settings from bedside tutor to lead English and Special Education teacher positions for the past 5 years. I tutored at bedside in Riley Childrens in 2007 and by 2008 I was working as an after school counselor in Indianapolis. I went on to proctor tests for students with special needs and new language learners at IUPUI in 2010. I had teacher observation experiences at George Washinton Community School, Crispis Attucks Middle School and Lawrence Central High School. My student teaching experience was 16 weeks of full time lead teaching which gave me all the responsibilities and authority of the teacher. For this experience, I taught general education English at Howe Academy followed by teaching both Inclusion English and Life Skills classes at Short Risge. This summer I engaged middle and high school students in Creative Writing, resume development and ... read more

My comments on tutoring Literature : As a high school teacher, much of the curriculum focused on literature -- from short stories in their literature books to reading classics like Great Expectations, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Scarlet Letter, Huckleberry Finn, The Prince and the Pauper, and Red Badge of Courage. My students were also required to read classics throughout the year, which I also participated in reading many with them.

Since graduating from Baptist Bible College in 2006, I have been teaching high school English in Indiana for six years now. I taught three years at Bethesda Christian School in Brownsburg, where I spanned English 9, 10, 11, Senior Speech, and Advanced Composition for seniors. In 2010 I began teaching at Faith Christian School in Lafayette; there I taught English 9, 10, and 11. I was also the Yearbook Advisor two years at Faith. July 1, 2013, I had my first baby, and I have decided to stay at home and raise her instead of returning to the classroom.
I am a very hands-on learner, so I tend to try to make things as hands on or as real to life as possible.

My teaching style varies upon subject and student.
I graduated from Jefferson High School in the spring of 2012. I now attend Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne. I have two younger siblings and 4 younger step-siblings that I have helped with their homework, or helped them better understand material assigned to them. Their ages range from 8-17. I know how to explain certain subjects in multiple ways to ensure that eventually the student will understand the material. I am very patient, and I understand that some people learn at slower rates than others. I am majoring in nursing, though I considered teaching English before making this decision. I love teaching, and am looking to make some extra money for things I need while in college.

Honor Student hoping to help students achieve success

Hello! My name is Kayla Bear. I am a first-year student at Purdue University; however, I am a sophomore according to my credit hours. I earned college credit in high school to get ahead of the game. I worked as a peer mentor throughout high school, helping students with their homework and helping prepare them for tests such as the SAT. I have taken a number of courses in various subjects, so I feel that I am able to help a wide range of students. I was editor of my high school yearbook last year, so I have a lot of experience training people in writing and grammar. I was also asked to tutor Statistics for Purdue University due to my high achievement in my statistics class in the fall 2012 semester. I believe I can truly help students of all ages achieve better grades and success in school.
I never learned best when I was just asked to read a passage out of a book. I need to be able ... read more

Literature is one of my top subjects! I am exceptionally strong in American and British literature.

I combine various styles from "old school" to best practices to differentiated offers.
I have taught nearly all areas of language arts including, but not limited to, ECA/GQE remediation, SAT/ACT prep, beginning-intermediate-advance composition, AP English/literature, poetry, American literature, British literature, drama, speech, and school newspaper. I have, in addition, worked with school drama productions, encouraged my "poetically inclined" students to participate in school poetry slams and co-founded a student art/literary publication. I was also voted "Most Influential Teacher" for eight straight years. Additionally, I have been an instructor in adult education with a high pass result for my GED students.
