My comments on tutoring Elementary Phonics : After an initial assessment, lessons start with the student's weakest area and progress from there.

My teaching style is one of facilitator. I like to emphasize student-centered learning giving students the responsibility to take the initiative for meeting the demands of various learning tasks. However, I am aware that many times with my regular education students and the students that I tutor, I am a combination of facilitator and demonstrator with an emphasis on demonstration and modeling. I guide students in developing and applying their skills.
I have been teaching in a public school in the Sugar Land area for 27 years. For the past 10 years, I have taught both regular education and GT students in the English Language Arts block. Many of my former students were waived ESL intermediate students whose grasp of reading and writing grew within the time spent in my class. In having a science background, I have not only learned laboratory skills and reasoning skills, but I have learned how to increase efficiency, communicate in a clear manner, and write in a way that is direct and clear. I enjoy learning, and I instill that passion into my students as best I can. I grew up with a mom who is an English teacher, so I have developed good communication skills and writing skills from her. I have taught Biology for two years at the college level and I very much enjoy the experience of knowing that what you have been trying to convey to your students just hit home. That is a great feeling.
