A Little Bit About Me...

I have three sons and have coached students in various sporting activities so I'm no stranger with working with kids. As I stated above though I don't have any professional experience and therefore it would be difficult to describe a teaching style. Given the opportunity though I will try to assist my students in learning by trying to identify and understand the child’s needs and by relating the subject material to practical applications. A method that I’ve always found more effective than just learning for learning sake.

I taught a computer "cap-stone" class to graduating seniors part-time at the Katherine Gibbs school for 1 semester. There were approximately 14 Seniors in the class and we utilized all of the Office programs from the creation of letterheads to the writing of business correspondence to mythical persons about various subjects. I tutored algebra and calculus at high school. I was a substitute teacher for 7th graders and for a SAT type prep school. Also, when I studied mathematics at universities with students, we taught each other.
It is important to spark the students interest by showing the relevance of math in every day life to complex problems. There needs to be a clear dialogue between the instructor and the pupil. For some, one example is sufficient; while others need more. The amount that the student performs in front of the teacher depends on the level of the student. For example, the pupil that learns quickly, should be taught the equations and theory rapidly. The proof of the success is in how well the homework is performed. For the slower student, problems in front of the tutor need to be done until the pupil grasps the material well enough to do it alone.
