I am not overbearing. I am laid back, but at the same time, I make sure that the student learns what he/she needs to learn. I am very patient. I try to respect the student and not make learning seem like a chore. Building a foundation of learning skills, even during a short tudoring session can really change a student's approach in all of their classes.
I have taken education classes at Northern Kentucky University. At one point, I was considering on being a Art Teacher. I didn't finish with that path, but I did gain much experience with children and knowledge during that time in working with students. I have worked and studied special needs children as well. This past school year I worked with a senior high school student on his pre-calculus schoolwork; we met once a week and he was able to improve his grade enough to pass the class and keep his athletic scholarship to Indiana Tech. I also mentored a freshman high school student in the area once a week and participated in the tutoring program at the South Bend Juvenile Correctional Facility.
I always try to encourage the student to do the problems on his or her own, especially in math. I feel I have enough experience in math to be able to try different angles or come up with examples to help the student understand the concepts. I hope to help the student think positively and realize that he or she can do anything if he or she believes.

Most math and science classes are problem driven. As a tutor, I would go over home work problems assigned to the student. If this wasn't complete enough, I would allow the student to use some of the learning CD's I have on the subjects that are also problem driven. If the student is having trouble understanding concepts then I would try to create analogies relative to the student's environment.

A Little Bit About Me...

As I began college, experience working with children also began. I started out in childcare facilities, with children 6 weeks to 12 years of age, and also in after school care working with preschool-3rd grade students. I continued with both jobs and gained more experience through field work. Upon graduation, I substitute taught in the middle school grades, with a long term position in Math. Over the past three years I have spent it working with students with disabilities such as cognitive, behavioral, emotional, autism, and traumatic brain injury.
I love teaching, but more than anything I enjoy trying to figure out how to teach a child. Every child learns differently and I think its important to incorporate their personal interests. I enjoy setting attainable goals, with the students, and attaching rewards when they reach them.
