Introducing young children to language requires a very different set of skills and expectations that teaching freshmen composition at the college level. As the 7th Grade English and reading teacher at Robison Middle School, test scores on the state-mandated proficiency exam improved by 24%. After one year of service, I was asked to be the Chair of the Reading department. As the instructor for Read 180, I developed students' reading abilities who were far below school and district standards. Using a set curriculum based on computer, large group and small group discussion, I balanced classwork and themed topics to assist students in overcoming reading difficulties.
