"Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.
Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent graduate of The University of Chicago, I have a deep respect and understanding for education. I earned a bachelor degree in Biological Sciences in June of 2009. During my undergraduate career, I gained a strong understanding in the subjects of math and science. In addition to my academic skills, I am proficient in French. During the last two years at The University of Chicago, I tutored middle and elementary school students through a school sponsored program.
Through my experience tutoring in college, I learned to approach each student with patience and respect at each and every tutoring session. I strongly believe that a good tutor can teach almost anything to almost anyone, given the correct pace and teaching method. I believe that some students need more time to learn and others just need to see the problem from a different way. I am willing to put in the time ... read more

I am currently a middle school math teacher in Hollywood Florida. Prior to accepting my current job, I taught English in Japan for two years. My teaching experience, along with a liberal arts education at Emory University, has primed me to be a successful tutor in a variety of different subjects.
Teaching and tutoring, while similar, are actually two distinct practices. While teaching presents a subject to a large group of students, tutoring requires the tutor to work with an individual to determine his or her strengths and weaknesses, and go forward from there. As a tutor, it is extremely important to identify an individual's needs and work together accordingly.

Most rewarding for a teacher is seeing the difference she makes in her students’ lives. When I began teaching to smaller groups and individual students, I realized how dynamic personal attention is to the learning process. I saw this when teaching AP students and providing them with personal “essay reviews.” “She’s talking to me. She’s showing me. She really cares.” And I do. I so enjoy working one on one with learners. The personal dialogue is invaluable to learning. Would that the education system could provide such a service to all students. At this point in my ongoing career in education, I want nothing more than to share my expertise with students who need personal attention. The rewards continue…

As a Political Science major, I was interested in politics, history and languages. I strived to excell in these subjects because I enjoyed them as well as was and still am passionate about these subjects. As a result I learned exceptional communication skills and written skills by being required to write essays and do projects on various topics. I was also the vice president of the political science forum. I also received my teaching certificate from University of Cambridge in order to be able to teach English as second language to students in Greece.
I love teaching and working with children because the sense of helping a child and seeing their smile on their face is priceless. However, I beleive that all children are special and require special attention as they are unique individuals. I see this in my two sons who are so different from one another.

I give students respect and try to be attentive to their needs. I familiarize myself with their strengths and weaknesses for the subject so that I can determine how I can best help them. I write down every step as I explain the answers, so they learn the mechanisms of problem solving for each class. They can take these lessons for further reference on how to learn other new problems. Also, I oversee their work to make sure they are making progress in preparation of their tests. I have a good system to oversee they learn the right skills to complete their work well.

Merely listing my fluency in foreign languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Greek, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese, and Amharic) does not do justice to the hours—nay, years!—involved in learning them, nor does it fully capture my natural gift for—and dedication to—mastering the linguistic intricacies of each language. I have dedicated my life to foreign languages. I would never say I am the most gifted tutor ever. I will say I am the most dedicated individual to—and disciple of—tutoring foreign languages to young adults.
With over sixty months' experience at the US Department of State, I have seen firsthand bureaucratic morass gone wild. From lengthy "informational" sessions, to quotidian meetings held just for the sake of holding meetings, public bureaucrats waste taxpayers' dollars and time, in the process doing all of us a disservice. After graduating cum laude from Yale University with a PhD in Eating, I interned for two years at Dunkin Donuts, fine tuning my skills in eating pastries. I've also spent two summers eating in various food malls, specializing in China One, Chick Fil-A, and Baskin Robins. I have tutored students Overeating, Pizza, and Alka Seltzer.
I believe all children can enjoy eating broccoli. I find this works best if the broccoli is smothered with cheese and accompanied on the plate with something fried. I have found that overeating is a very effective way to teach the student dangerous gastric consequences. I demonstrate this by ordering pizza, allowing them to eat as much as they want, and then immediately afterwards giving them free reign to various quarts of ice cream. I know I can make a difference in every students' stomach.
