My passion is making mathematics accessible. After high school I was underwhelmed by mathematics. However as I took more math in college, I realized how much I had missed in high school. As I learned more mathematics, I became determined to make it my business to find and implement better methods of educating people on mathematics in a way that does not overwhelm them, but simultaneously makes their learning experience more useful. I studied teacher education as an undergraduate, and attended graduate school at Dartmouth where the program in mathematics has a specific focus on preparing one to teach mathematics. I look forward to continuing making progress on my goal of making mathematics more useful, and more accessible to more students. Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing. I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. How do I summarize teaching in my life? I guess the best way to explain my teaching experience is to tell you a story. As a young girl I wanted to be a teacher. Because of my love of learning I taught all my siblings how to read. I know it is pretty funny but it is a true story. I believe all students have the ability to succeed. In my experience, the most important thing to remember is that all students learn differently, and sometimes what seems like an impossible task just needs to be presented differently for better understanding. I think Math is the most beautiful subject and the highest form of human expression. A lot of times people are turned away from it due to a high school math experience that they perceive as dry and boring. When I tell people I love math, I too often hear "well, better you than me!" I think part of the high school math experience should include turning students on to mathematical discovery. Confronting confusion and working through to develop an understanding that feels personal and thorough.
