A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is very subjective. Each individual learns according to his/her own style. What I find challenging and rewarding is to find that point where it “clicks”. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and discovery. As an example, I can describe the intelligence of an octopus. But until you actually see a video of one opening a jar for a treat, do you truly realize it as a thinking, planning being. I feel that teaching an individual how to use available resources is just as important as the actual subject. Enabling a student to go out and discover the wonders around him/her through research and education is a wonderful thing indeed.

During my life I have worked in several types of businesses in which I would usually advance to becoming the lead person, teacher to the ones working below me. Micro welding had to teach others how to set machines and run them. I built parts which went to the moon, had to teach the others how they were made. Owned an upholstery business and taught people how to sew, cut, and hang the materials on the furniture. I helped my sons and later my granddaughters with home work. All of this should add up to a year of tutoring students. Teaching the students they need to ask questions that concern them the most and then always manage to work through them.

A Little Bit About Me...

I received a BS degree in chemistry and a minor in applied biology. My original thought was to attend medical school (I even took the MCAT), but decided to persue a PhD in inorganic chemistry instead. I have extensive experience in working with students. I worked as an organic chemistry lab assistant as an undergraduate. During graudate school, I taught both general and analytical chemistry. I am currently teaching chemistry classes at Terra State Community College.
I believe that anyone can understand the subject matter if it is presnted to them in a way that fits their unique learning style. My teaching style is inclusive of the hands-on approach. I believe that all students should have equal access to education. While that doesn't hold true, in the classroom, I encourage and appreciate students whom voice their opinion on a regular basis. I believe that all students also have a different approach to learning, and thus, they must be approached differently with different methods. Some students are definitely visual learners, while others are auditory or kinesthetic learners.
