When I was in college I always wanted to be involved helping shape the youth of our nation. It has been five years post-graduation and I still have the desire to continue my work with youth and adolescents. Why do I feel like that? The intention and the desire have always been inside of me: a craving to explore the cultural differences and environments in our society. My past experiences have taught me that I have an ability to motivate youth through rapport building and mutual respect. I know that touching one’s life is a huge reward to everyone involved. During my service as a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa, I taught chemistry and tutored the students in all fields in my spare time. I have extensive grammatical skills and have written numerous papers. I believe that all children learn in different ways and my teaching style is designed to accommodate these differences. I am a big believer in teaching to an individual student's strengths, depending upon their skill sets and passions. A graduate of the University of Montana School of Journalism, I earned a Double Degree in Journalism and English. I originally received my Montana Secondary Teaching Certificate through UM. While working on my bachelor's in psychology I taught for 3 years at an after school and summer science enrichment teacher and coordinator. I then decided to take my love of learning further and obtain a master's degree in teaching, therefore earning my elementary education teaching certificate. While working on my master's degree I tutored pre-k through 12th grade students in all subject areas. After graduation I received a position as a fifth grade classroom teacher in Sumter, SC. I successfully completed my 1st year of teaching last May and am looking forward to getting back to work helping students achieve their personal best.
