A Little Bit About Me...

My scholastic work includes a PhD in Mathematics and a MS in Electrical Engineering. I have taught and done research in mathematics for over 30 years and have tutored students at the high school and college level during the same period, as well as mentoring them in research projects. One of the more enjoyable aspects of my career was working with students in one-on-one tutoring situations. This extensive experience has helped me develop my Socratic tutoring method, described below.
My primary goal is to help the student understand the material so that it makes sense. My tutoring style involves asking lots of questions. One of the most interesting aspects of teaching is how different people process information. Oft times it is difficult to find a teaching style or method that can be equally useful to people of different learning types. I have found that teaching methods common to experiential educators, common practice in such disciplines as SCUBA diving, First Aid/CPR, Martial Arts, Art, etc., can be successfully applied to virtually any academic discipline. I've had a deep enthusiasm for mathematics and physics since an early age, when my father, a professor of physics at Dartmouth College, introduced me to the beauty and elegance of the principles underlying these fields. During my junior and senior years at Hanover High, I took courses for credit in both areas, and continued those studies at Princeton University, although ultimately I settled in a degree in psychology. After graduation, I spent one year teaching high school level mathematics at The Mountain School in Vershire, Vermont, before beginning a career in software engineering.
