People are always surprised when they find out I'm a math nerd. I'm outgoing, I like to joke and I play sports. But believe it or not, I actually do enjoy math and this is one of the biggest reasons for my success as a tutor/teacher. I don't fake my enthusiasm and this helps engage students. I like to think of myself as fun and I like to make a joke here and there. I believe that a lot of times, less is more when it comes to teaching math. I try to do as little leading as possible when helping students solve problems so that they will be best equipped in the future to solve on their own. My style is to teach a concept during the one on one session with me. I then give them homework to reinforce the learning on personal time. In the following meeting I revise what we learnt in previous session to ensure they understood before proceeding to next topic. I work with students with different learning styles (pictures, words and numbers) and will adapt to their needs. I am patient and will explain numerous times, in different ways, to ensure learning.
During my undergraduate years, I was tutoring a local grade 4 student in math. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience in making a difference in somebody's life. After earning my Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Mathematics in 1990 from the California State University at Stanislaus, I entered the credential program. In the credential program at C.S.U. Stanislaus, I became well prepared for all the nuances besides teaching that goes with being a teacher. I was introduced to the concept of classroom management, assertive discipline, and establishing a warm and friendly learning environment in the classroom. I learned and developed a repertoire of hands-on manipulatives, games, and puzzles to make the learning of math more exciting, fun, and easy.
