The best teachers (and tutors) are able to diagnose why a student is not understanding his schoolwork. Learning "glitches", different learning styles, and a fear of being wrong often contribute to the problem. I try to discern how the student is thinking about the work, and then I use a variety of techniques to guide him/her to understanding. I might model my own thinking, re-present a concept in an imaginative way, or use another learning style in order to capture the student's interest and encourage them to "risk" in order to learn. My trigonometry experience comes from pre-calculus, so I am strong with identities and solving for sides and angles. My teaching style is flexible because every student learns differently. What I usually start out with is showing examples and having the student ask questions along the way. Then, I allow the student to try some problems as we work through them together. Although I do not have much experience with regards to tutoring, I often help my fellow peers with their homework and tutor them on the things that they struggle on.
