A Little Bit About Me...

I have had a deep interest in helping people since I was a young child. Seeing someone succeed because of my help is one of the greatest motivators for me, especially when it's "against the odds". As a college student I tutored the students who really wanted to learn but couldn't through no fault of their own--those with learning disabilities and non-native English speakers. I have tutored many subjects such as language (French and English), math, and physical sciences.
It is difficult to describe my teaching style because I try to adapt to the student. I have taugh young girls ranging from 10-13 years old for an LDS Church, and enjoyed working with these girls, arranged activities to fun places and helped college students with certain skill sets - math, English, Computer Programming (C+, Networking, Access, PeopleSoft). I am a very helpful person who loves to help others to success with their classes, and enjoyed seeing how their grades improved with some of the help that I have rendered to these students - they did well on their tests, quizzes and coached them with Speech class as well. I think Math is the most beautiful subject and the highest form of human expression. A lot of times people are turned away from it due to a high school math experience that they perceive as dry and boring. When I tell people I love math, I too often hear "well, better you than me!" I think part of the high school math experience should include turning students on to mathematical discovery. Confronting confusion and working through to develop an understanding that feels personal and thorough. I believe that everyone must learn in an individual way at their own pace and I am prepared to put in the necessary effort to give my students that opportunity. As a graduate of The Kings College the professors taught me the value of working with children on an individual basis. They taught me that there are many different learning styles a student may have. This is what got me interested in the Title 1 Program. As a tutor in this program my focus was Reading and Math at the elementary level.
