Teacher Who Can Teach Any Student!

I do not ever yell or scare my students into behaving the way I have seen many teachers do. With many students this does not work. I respect my students and in turn they respect me. This creates an atmosphere where students want to behave for me.
Taught in Greenwood and Greenville county schools 12 years. I taught reading recovery, resource, and self contained classrooms. Before that I was an ABA line therapist for students with autism. I have a degree in Elementary Education with a specialization in Special Education. I am certified as a Elementary and Special Education teacher through the SC state Department of Education. I now own my own tutoring business Shining Stars Tutoring LLC.

More About This Tutor...

Education, teaching in particular, gives individuals the opportunity to give back what they have received. It is communication on a broader level than just simply putting forth information to whomever chooses to accept it. I started my career in education before I set foot on a college campus, through a peer-tutoring program in my high school. This experience allowed me to work with severely disabled peers learning functional skills for independence. Since then I have worked as an aide in emotional/behavior and multiple-disability middle school classrooms, as well as LD-resource, ED self contained and SC occupational diploma program. In addition I have earned a degree of distinction with the National Forensic League, been name a scholar-athlete in South Carolina and a host of other accolades in scholarship. A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BA in Bible/English and 40 graduate hours in English education. Once my children were school aged I began teaching kindergarten. I was a substitute teacher for many years on the elementary and secondary levels. In 1997 I went back to work full-time as a special education teacher in a Christian school. I taught reading, English grammar and composition (grades 3-11), study skills, English, American, and world literature, and one year of geography. I have been instructed in the Wilson method of teaching reading and find it really helps students who are dyslexic or having problems learning to read. I have also worked in an after-school tutoring program for kindergarten and first grade students.
I love working with students, and I especially enjoy helping students who are struggling with reading. It is very gratifying to see a reluctant reader master the necessary skills to suc ... read more

I believe that students learn in different ways, and it is our job as educators to help enrich them for the future. When given the proper instructions and guidance I firmly believe that any child can succeed if just one person believes in them. I believe in all of my students, and do my best to help them reach their goals.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in good classroom management and organized lesson plans. I set appropriate boundaries and expect the students to follow the rules that are set before them. That being said I try to make the learning as fun as possible but organized. I also try to bring in anything that they are interested in to make them enjoy the subject they are learning. If I can find an example in life they can relate to that will help them learn something I will find it and bring it in. I love working with children and really love math.
Although I have been self employed for the last 6 years, I went back to school last year to add Science and Math for middle school to my certification. I passed the Praxis for both of those subjects spring of 2010. I was not able to get a full time teaching position this year. I went back to working for myself but would love to tutor. I have tutored for 3 yea ... read more

I have learned that every child is unique and all have different learning styles and perhaps, that is why they are struggling with learning some information. I am a strong believe in mulitple intelligences and I strive to help the student learn which is the best way for him or her to learn. I am not only an effective teacher because I give the student a different way of learning, but I also care about the students. A Little Bit About Me...

The visual-auditory-kinesthetic or VAK method of instruction is a hands-on, child-involved method that reaches students with all types of learning needs. It is my primary teaching strategy utilized. I find it important to match reading material,(utilizing both student ability and interest levels,)to promote maximum reading success. I offer flexibility and much enthusiasm for each subject that I teach. I am a life long learner, as conveyed in countless ways to my students. I'm caring, kind, patient and understand my students' needs and abilities. I find it imperative to not only applaud my students' strengths but also to encourage the "weaker" skills that they possess. I have good rapport with students and their families as well.

I believe that all students, regardless of gender, socioeconomic environment or ability, can learn and should be challenged with creative and applicable opportunities to achieve their best. Understanding that not all individuals learn in the same way, at the same rate or retention level, my responsibility as an educator is to create a safe learning environment that facilitates academic, social, and emotional growth that is developmentally appropriate. This enables those students entrusted to me to become active and contributing members of the community and encourages life-long learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I was home-schooled until the sixth grade with my three brothers. I completed junior high at a private school and then graduated Salutatorian from a public high school. My parents operated a small day care that I worked in with school age children completing homework assignments. I have also worked in a Day Care as a caregiver for small children. Volunteering at a Family Literacy program and doing Student Practicums for three years followed by a semester of Student Teaching have all prepared me to teach children from all backgrounds with different educational and emotional needs.
I believe that all students can learn. It is the teacher’s responsibility to teach the standards in the way that the students learn, and to create a nurturing environment for the students.
