A Little Bit About Me...

I was a teaching assistant at North Georgia College and State University for three years. I assisted with laboratory sections of biology courses and taught them in the event of a professors absence. I provided department funded tutoring services during that time as well. I have taken the GRE and Biology Section of the GRE and received excellent scores on both tests in only one sitting. I have also coached 4H horse quiz bowl and horse judging teams for several years working with elementary and middle school age children.

A Little Bit About Me...

I use positive motivation with my students, explaining how subject matter being covered should relate to them and their future successes. I try to link the subjects with current events and how lack of knowledge on specific subjects can cost them either financially or impact their health and well being. For example, when I encounter a senior who is not participating in class, I give them an employment application to fill out, explaining if they have difficulty completing it, they better join the class.
I graduated LSU and was commissioned as an officer in the US Air Force. I completed Transportation Officer courses on vehicle fleet management, commercial transportation, and staff logistics officer training related to airlift terminal management and operations. I taught college-level students in the classroom and in an aquatic environment for three years. I also taught aspiring instructors on an ad hoc basis during that period. I have classroom experience with high school children in a special education setting, involving an extreme amount of patience and a willingness to find different ways in which to impart learning on non-traditional students.
I believe in short-term goal attainment. I first assess what the student feels they know, then look at what needs to be learned and from that I build a goal-oriented task set that should result in a learned skill set. I am also very good at thinking outside the box in order to get the skill set learned and to effect "true learning" as opposed to parroted learning.

My current teaching style is adaptable to the learning styles of the students that I am teaching. In general, if I am teaching a certain topic, I will first ask students a few questions on the topic in order to identify the level of their familiarity. This enable the student(s) to build on transferable skills as well as recover knowledge stored in memory. After that,I will give an overview of the topic. For example, if my topic is atom, students will be told the word "atom" is associated with elements along with other facts. Next, I would give the students oral/written questions to ascertain their principal learning styles in order to modify my teaching style for optimum learning.
