I'm a senior in high school, and I tutor classmates and my younger brother age 11 and his friends. He is in the fifth grade, and it is really easy to tutor him. My approach to teaching is to provide what is needed, and sometimes that is not limited to the explicit task at hand. As an English teacher/tutor, I have often found that, rather than merely showing students how to recognize a complete sentence and use correct punctuation and grammar, the more important thing is to prove to them that they can think, and that they are intelligent. To this end, I use gentle Socratic questioning to stimulate students, loosen them up, get them interested, and increase their comfort. Often, what comes out of a student's mouth is surprisingly wonderful, and I quickly say, "That's great! Write that down!" I think it is important to make learning fun at every age. Education should not be a chore but something to embrace.
